                        Sift 2 cups of flour
   1      tsp           salt
   3      tsp           baking powder together
Crumble in 1 Tbsp of shortening very finely and add
1 cup milk all at once.
Mix together with a fork, with as few strokes as possible.
The real secret of light dumplings lies in the cooking.
Heavy pots with tight fitting lids are best.  Have the stew
just boiling when you drop in the dumplings, cover tightly
and cook over moderate heat fifteen minutes EXACTLY.
Don't be tempted to remove the lid during this time, or
the dumplings will be soggy and not light and fluffy 
as they should be.
