Research Efforts

Significant research is being performed in the pursuit of "disease-modifying" therapies, and recent scientific discoveries have increased optimism that such therapies will be developed.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke conducts research in labs at the National Institutes of Health and also supports additional research through grants to major medical institutions across the country.  Scientists looking for the cause of Parkinson’s continue to search for possible environmental factors, such as toxins, that may trigger the disorder, and study genetic factors to determine how defective genes play a role.  Other scientists are working to develop new protective drugs that can delay, prevent, or reverse the disease.

Other research entities, like The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research  and The Mayo Clinic, play major roles in Parkinson's research.

Medical centers of excellence like Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland constantly have research projects going on and are usually looking for participants.
